Winemaker notes:

Our selection is crafted in the South of France by the Castan family. The company was founded at the turn of the 20th Century by Joseph Castan. His great-grandson, Vianney, now run it. Through the efforts of the Castan Family, this area has grown in popularity in giant leaps.

It wasn't long ago that the Languedoc had no respect. Most of the wines were inexpensive and inexpressive. Yet, many growers knew that their vineyards were better than the wines and set out to prove it. One of those areas is Corbieres, from which our selection hails.

Corbieres was probably one of the very first areas to be singled out as being exceptional. Most likely because it has similarities to the Cotes du Rhone in climate, soil, and grape varieties. It has taken an entire generation to gain the respect the wine world. Still, thanks to people like the Castan's, they have succeeded.

Like its famous neighbor, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Croix d'Aumedes is an imposing amalgam of ripe fruit flavors, yet still has the backbone and authority to age for years. The main component here, 40%, is made up of old vine Carignan, which constitutes its imposing palate. Equal parts of Syrah and Grenache both accentuate that power and complement it. The result is ripe plum, anise, and cocoa underlying the voluptuous fruit to harness a grilled filet or a slow-roasted lamb loin with garlic and rosemary.
